In 1765, the first rums distilled by the “Trou Vaillant” estate were exported to North America under the name Saint-James. Paulin Lambert adopted this name for all his production when he acquired the estate in 1882.

In 1902, the eruption of Mount Pelée partially destroyed the distillery, which remained inactive until 1905. After being acquired by the Cointreau company in 1973, the distillery was relocated from Saint-Pierre to Sainte-Marie on Martinique’s east coast in 1974.

Since July 14, 2003, it has been owned by La Martiniquaise, the leading producer and distributor of A.O.C. agricultural rum. This expression, embodying an unshakable spirit of freedom, effortlessly transcends its origins, even evoking the character of a distinguished Scottish single malt.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Rich and juicy. Initially, the aromas of sugar and cane honey burst from the glass. These are followed by deeper root-like scents (gentian), chocolatey undertones, and earthy hints (carrot, turnip). The overall impression is undeniably captivating.

Palate: Smooth and velvety. Medicinal (balm), spicy (curry, turmeric), and herbal (bay leaf, chervil), the flavor profile is uniquely original. At times, it strikingly resembles the Scottish single malt Ben Nevis. Gradually, candied ginger and cocoa powder spread across the palate, adding warmth and depth.

Finish: Long and tranquil. The experience remains closely tied to sugar cane, evolving into more tertiary notes (mushroom, roasted nuts, moss, chestnut). The retro-olfaction is milky (soy, almond) and jammy (quince jelly, apricot), while the empty glass reveals spicy (nutmeg) and root-like (gentian) nuances.
